Three-day ‘Shandur Polo Festival 2018’ kicks off today

CHITRAL: The world famous ‘Shandur Polo Festival 2018’ has kicked off in Shandur Top area on Saturday.

Shandur Top ‘the roof of the world’ is one of the major mountain passes that sits between Chitral and Ghizer District of GB.

The flat top also serves as a venue for the 3-day polo festival where the best of the best players from Chitral and Gilgit meet in the finals. Holding such a massive festival at an altitude is an uphill task, that’s why people at Chitral administration always quote “Shandur is not a festival, it’s a battle” for which arrangements and resource mobilization starts from early February.

A large number of tourists have arrived in Chitral to witness the game of the kings. Shandur serves as the highest polo ground on the face of the earth.

Youth Ambassador of the German Embassy Islamabad Marion Pfennigs and German Ambassador to Pakistan Martin Kobler enjoyed the polo match on the first day.

Talking to ARY News correspondent, the diplomats said this was their first trip to Shandur and Chitral and they were feeling immense pleasure on watching such a scenic and serene place.

They invited tourists from all over the world to visit Chitral and enjoy the natural beauty.

Three polo matches will be held on second day of the festival: first match between Chitral C and Gilgit C, second between Chitral B and Gilgit B and third between Chitral Officers and Gilgit Officers.

A special helpline desk has also been established for tourist facilitation at DC Chitral Office with phone number 0943-412519, Facebook page (Facebook.com/DCChitral) and twitter handle (@DC_Chitral).
