SFA seals 12 shops for selling unhygienic ‘khoya’ in Karachi

KARACHI: Sindh Food Authority (SFA) on Monday sealed as many as 12 shops in Karachi’s Juna Market for selling unhygienic ‘khoya,’ ARY News reported.

As per details, an action was taken by the SFA in Juna Market to inspect the hygiene conditions of the shops selling ‘khoya.’

The Sindh’s food inspection body during a raid, sealed at least 12 shops and held a score of shopkeepers for selling sub-standard ‘khoya.’

“The shopkeepers were making khoya using the chemical and powder which is used for animals,” the officials of the food authority said.

Earlier on November 20, in the wake of the death of two minor brothers from food poisoning

after eating unhygienic food at a restaurant in Karachi, the provincial government had decided to make the Sindh Food Authority (SFA) more effective to check quality of food being sold at eateries in the province.

The Sindh chief secretary had  presided over a meeting of the SFA during which a number of key decisions were taken to improve the working of the regulatory body.

It was decided that the SFA would recruit 40 food safety officers and launch a campaign to spread awareness among the public about expiry of food items.

Food samples to be collected from eateries will be sent to the University of Karachi’s laboratory for examination.
