ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) on Thursday discarded a petition filed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) seeking the dismissal of Chairman NAB Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal from his post.
Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar gave the decision to reject the petition filed by PML-N leader Noor Ahmed Awan in an in-chamber session.
Awan filed a petition on May 12 in the Supreme Court, seeking removal of the chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB). The petition cited that NAB issued a press release on May 8 to investigate former prime minister Nawaz Sharif for being allegedly involved in money laundering of $4.9 billion to India.
The bureau’s press release mentioned that the information was taken from the Migration and Remittance Book 2016. Nonetheless, the State Bank of Pakistan had rejected the quoted information, the petition noted.
Moreover, the petition claimed that the intention of accountability bureau was to malign Nawaz Sharif. Therefore, the press release of NAB had created doubts pertaining to the integrity of the institution, it mentioned.
Petitioner Awan pleaded that orders should be given to probe the motive behind issuance of such a press release, adding that the NAB chairman should also submit an unconditional apology for this act.
The petition also sought removal of the incumbent NAB chairman from his post.
