LAHORE: The Supreme Court on Saturday directed the police to exhume the body of a minor girl, allegedly subjected to sexual assault before being strangled to death, for medical examination.
This direction came during hearing of a suo motu case pertaining to the alleged rape of seven-year-old girl in Jaranwala.
IG Punjab Police Arif Nawaz Khan informed the bench that the police were investigating the incident from different angles, but have made no progress with regard to the arrest of the girl’s murderer(s).
Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, who headed the bench, expressed displeasure over the police for failing to make any headway in the case.
The bench directed the medical superintendent of Allied Hospital to carry out medical examination of the minor afresh after her body is exhumed to ascertain whether she was subjected to sexual abuse.
The minor girl had went missing on the afternoon of April 01 and later, her body bearing torture marks was recovered from fields near Sabzi Mandi in Jaranwala at around 9:00 pm on the same day.
The incident caused widespread outrage in Jaranwala with the people taking to the streets in protest against the police for failing to bring the culprits to justice. Schools, shops and other businesses remained closed for two consecutive days following the murder of the minor.
Earlier, postmortem of the girl reportedly confirmed that the minor was subjected to rape before being murdered by her captors.
A first information report (FIR) of the incident was registered against unidentified culprits on the complaint of the girl’s father.
