SC orders civic agencies to clean drains before rains

KARACHI: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Saturday directed the civic administration of the metropolis to clean storm water drains before the start of rains.

A bench of the apex court at its Karachi registry gave this direction while hearing a case pertaining to non-provision of clean water and poor sanitation in the province.

Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, a member of the bench, observed the city will suffer if storm water drains of the city are not cleaned before the onset of rainy season.

A provincial law officer said work to clean drains had already started.

Upon this,

Justice Faisal Arab, another member of the bench, expressed displeasure, saying this is shameful that the authorities have undertaken the task now. They should have done that on their own without prior court orders.

There are 30 big and 500 small drains in the city, which will take time to be cleaned, the state counsel said, adding that the Sindh government has also announced to release Rs 500 million for the purpose.

The bench directed the civic authorities to complete the task of cleaning storm water drains at the earliest and submit a compliance report until May 05.
