Rangers file petition in ATC over threats to witnesses in Dr. Asim case

KARACHI: Sindh Rangers have filed a petition on Wednesday in Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) here over threats of dire consequences to the witnesses in Dr. Asim’s case, which also include Rangers’ three personnel, ARY News reported.

Lawyer representing Sindh Rangers filed a petition in the ATC which stated that Dr. Asim Hussain and his other associates are threatening the witnesses of dire consequences upon testifying against former petroleum minister.

The petition says that Dr. Yousuf Sattar and one other witness, whose name could not be ascertained, have received threat of life from the accused and his associates. The witnesses also include three Rangers personnel.

The lawyer in the petition has said that the main accused was granted bail by Sindh High Court (SHC) on November 11, 2016 with the directive to complete the trial within two months.

The petition pleaded the court to complete Dr. Asim’s trial on immediate basis by recording statements of witnesses, particularly the Rangers personnel in the wake of their transfer and deployment to other cities.

On March 31 this year, Dr. Asim Hussain was released after almost 19 months in detention in cases related to terror facilitation and corruption.

Following his release, Dr. Asim has filed a petition last week in the SHC for removal of his name from Exit Control List (ECL) to go abroad for medical treatment. The court, in this regard, had summoned reply from the interior ministry.
