In a petition filed by one Mehmood Akhtar Naqvi, it was contended that Mir Shakeel was sentenced to 26-year in prison on blasphemy charges by Gilgit court but he was patronized by the state to leave the country.
An Anti-Terrorism Court in Gilgit had sentenced Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman 26 years in prison with Rs 1.3 million fine on Tuesday over a broadcast showing people dancing to a song about the wedding of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad’s daughter.
The petitioner sought court directions to cancel license of Mir Shakeel’s Urdu and English dailies.
He also appealed that court to make Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Information Minister Pervez Rasheed as respondents in the case.
An anti-terror court of Gilgit had said in its verdict “The malicious acts of the proclaimed offenders ignited the sentiments of all the Muslims in the country … which cannot be taken lightly and there is need to strictly curb such tendency.”
