Imran Khan offers ‘prayer of thanks’ after Panamagate verdict

ISLAMABAD: In the wake of the guilty verdict of the Supreme Court in the Panamagate case, disqualifying Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan offered prayers of thanks, ARY News reported.

Terming the verdict as landmark, the PTI chief expressed his delight over the court decision. He said thanksgiving day would be observed throughout the country to celebrate the historic verdict against his arch-rival Sharif.

He is holding consultative meeting of his party leaders to discuss the party’s strategy in the backdrop of the verdict and is expected to address a press conference in a while.

A five-judge Supreme Court bench announced its much-awaited verdict disqualifying Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a unanimous judgment in the Panamagate 

case, thus cutting short his third stint in power.

Soon after the SC judgement, the PM House issued a terse statement saying that Nawaz Sharif, despite having reservations on the court verdict, has stepped down from his post as the premier.

Sharif served as prime minister twice in the 1990s. In his first tenure differences with than president Ghulam Ishaq caused his downfall in 1993, while he was ousted in 1999 military coup in his second term of government by General Musharraf leading to a decade of exile in Saudi Arabia. He won a third term as prime minister in May 2013 general election.
