LAHORE: Pakistan Railways has launched a mobile app which allows passengers to book railways tickets easily through their smartphone.
Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique while addressing a press conference during the launch of the mobile app said the achievement will be remembered as a historic milestone for the Pakistan Railways.
He thanked the IT Department of the Railways for their efforts to develop and launch the app. He said that the IT department was also revamped, as earlier experts from the private sector were recruited but refused to work due to the negative perception of the railways.

He announced that the tickets of 48 trains which had been included under e-ticketing service can now be booked through the app, while passengers can also select a seat of their choice without any extra charges.

However, he said those
without a smartphone can book tickets through their website. They are also making efforts to include mobile banking merchants for easy payment. A taxi service will also be launched to provide passengers transport facility to the railway station.He said that the mobile app will enhance the facilities provided to passengers which are unprecedented in the history of the Pakistan Railways.
The app is now available for download for Android users, and will also be expanded to iOS users later on.
He further said that 350 economy-class coaches are being converted into air-conditioned coaches. The will lead to a future where even economy class will be air-conditioned to protect from the weather. Also, a further 120 economy class coaches will be completely refurbished within four months.
He said that the Railways will audit the coaches to determine which their parts should be replaced as it could increase the product life-cycle by ten years. This upgrades cost Rs. 10 million per coach while a new coach is available for Rs. 90 million.
