Pak-India foreign secretaries fail to break diplomatic deadlock

During the meeting, Pakistan foreign secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhary raised issue of Kashmir, RAW’s involvement in subversive activities in Balochistan, Kulbhushan Jadhav’s capture and “the environment being created in India” for release of the Samjhauta Express blasts accused.

According to Indian Express, Indian foreign secretary took up the issue of the attack on the Pathankot airbase, the delay in the Pakistani trial of the Mumbai 26/11 accused and Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar’s listing at the United Nations.

The foreign secretaries met in Jaishankar’s South Block corner office where they raised “issues of concern”, sticking to stated positions and rhetoric.

Although there were expectations that they would discuss modalities to roll out the dialogue process, that did not happen because both sides hardened their positions, said the report.

New Delhi also rejected allegations of RAW’s involvement inside Pakistan. The Indian Express reported that it was a “heated but candid” meeting.

At the start of the meeting, Chaudhary raised the Kashmir issue, calling it a “core issue” for Pakistan. He said Kashmir remains the core issue that requires a just solution, in accordance with Security Council resolutions and wishes of the Kashmiri people.
