Nimrah’s death puts question mark over services at public hospitals

KARACHI: Death of Nimrah Baig, a young female student, who was shot during an exchange of fire between police and suspected robbers in North Karachi on Friday, has put a question mark over the services and performance of public hospitals in Karachi.

The young female student of Dow University of Health Sciences sustained bullet injuries during the exchange of firing between a police party and a group of suspects at Anda Mor area in Karachi.

Baig was initially shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital but no treatment was provided to her and after half an hour, she was referred to Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Center.

Her treatment started after two hours of the incident but by that time, it was too late. She succumbed to her injures at the hospital on Friday.

Talking to ARY News, Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister on Information Murtaza Wahab said that Abbasi Shaheed Hospital  was working under KMC and added that if mayor Karachi could not run the hospital, he should handed it over the Sindh government. Responding to another question, he said that Sindh chief minister had already directed the IGP to increase the training level of the police force to avoid such incidents.

Police had claimed that the woman, identified as 20-year-old Nimrah Baig, was struck by a bullet fired by the robbers.

An eye-witness, Shahid Niaz Alam said two suspects were robbing Nimrah at Anda Morr, when upon her screaming for help they shot her.

It has yet not been ascertained whether the bullet that she received came from an official weapon or that of the robbers.
