Lawyers meet Nawaz, Maryam at Adiala jail

ISLAMABAD: A team of legal counsels met ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz at Adiala jail on Saturday (today). 

The legal team including Sharif’s counsel Khawaja Haris and Maryam’s lawyer Amjad Pervaiz met their clients Nawaz, Maryam and Captain (retd) Safdar Awan at the Adiala jail.

According to sources, the lawyers discussed key legal matters with their clients during the meeting.

The jail authorities had cancel the meeting between the lawyers and the father-daughter duo on Thursday.

However, the meeting of convicts was arranged on the very day with 17 members of Sharif family and 23 leaders of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) including Asif Kirmani, Javed Hashmi, Pervaiz Rasheed and Ayaz Sadiq.

An accountability court, in Avenfield corruption reference, awarded 10 years prison term to the PML-N supreme leader, while his daughter Maryam and her spouse Capt. Safdar were handed seven years’ and one year’s prison term, respectively.

Judge Muhammad Bashir ordered forfeiture of their properties in the Avenfield Apartments and Park Lane of London. He imposed a fine of £8 million (approximately Rs1,292m) on the former premier and £2 million (approximately Rs323m) on his daughter.

Besides, three convicts were awarded an additional one-year imprisonment, which will run concurrently for not cooperating with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
