NAB challenges Dr Asim’s bail in two corruption cases in SC

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has gone to the Supreme Court challenging the bail granted to PPP Karachi President Dr Asim Hussain by the Sindh High Court in two corruption cases, ARY News reported on Saturday.

The NAB appealed the high court’s decision in the apex court, asking it to cancel the bail of Dr Asim in two NAB cases.

In its appeal, the NAB argued that PPP leader, a close aide of former president Asif Ali Zardari, was facing grave charges of corruption. He, therefore, is not entitled to such relief at this stage. The court has been pleaded to annul the verdict of the high court that granted him bail.

Dr Asim has been facing two corruption cases for allegedly depriving the public exchequer of Rs 462 million by misusing his authority to get land allotted illegally, encroaching upon the state land for expansion of Dr Ziauddin Hospital, money laundering, illegally awarding multi-billion gas processing contracts and receiving kickbacks.

The PPP leader was released on April 01 after about 19 months when the SHC granted him bail in the cases.

Earlier on June 5, a division bench of the high court had dismissed Dr Asim’s petition to have his passport back and travel restrictions removed so that he could undergo disc replacement surgery in London as, according to him,  the treatment of such an ailment was not possible in Pakistan.
