Motorcyclist killed in accident with US attache’s vehicle

ISLAMABAD: A motorcyclist was killed in a road accident after being hit by vehicle of a United States attache in Islamabad on Saturday.

Father of the victim has registered a case against US military attache Colonel Joseph Emanuel at Kohsar police station.

The First Information Report (FIR) reads the envoy violated traffic signal and rammed into the motorcycle near Maraghzar Zoo around 3:00 pm which caused death of Ateeq Baig and injured his cousin Raheel Ahmed.

In the CCTV footage, the defence attache can be clearly seen violating the traffic signal and crashing into the motorbike. Sources said he was drunk at the time of the road mishap.

The interior minister said law will take its due course against the 48-year-old diplomat.

According to ‘Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations’, the military attache enjoys the diplomatic immunity. His vehicle has however reportedly been confiscated by the police.

The passport that Joseph holds was issued in November 2016 which will expire on November 2, 2018.

Foreign Office Spokesman Dr Mohammad Faisal said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was looking into the matter.

“An accident involving a US embassy vehicle occurred in Islamabad. MOFA is looking into the matter. Investigations are being carried out,” he tweeted.
