Manchar Lake Contamination Case: SC gives one month to governments for effective measures

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court on Monday while hearing a case about disposal of toxic water into Manchar Lake, has expressed resentment over delay in taking preventive measures to clean the Lake, ARY News reported.

“Both federal and provincial governments are reluctant to take effective measures to ensure cleaning of the lake and entire work is being carried out on contract basis”, Justice Faiz Essa passed these remarks while giving one month time to both governments.

While urging to expedite cleanliness process of the water in Manchar Lake, once a huge body of freshwater and a big source of fishing in Dadu district of Sindh, the bench warned, the prime minister along with chief minister of Sindh would be summoned if no progress made within a month.

It is worth mentioning that Supreme Court had also issued notices to the secretaries of the federal finance and planning, development and reforms departments to personally appear for explanation over reluctance to protect the lake last year.

Supreme Court had launched suo moto hearing of the disposal of contaminated water into Manchar Lake, which had turned the freshwater lake sustaining fishermen communities and providing livelihood to thousands of fishermen, into toxic water pond, hazardous for health.
