LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered the provincial government to stop taking action against ride-hailing companies Uber and Careem, ARY News reported.
According to details, a LHC bench heard a petition against the ban on Uber and Careem filed by a citizen Muneer Ahmed.
The petitioner stated that no action can be taken against the ride-hailing companies unless a relevant legislation is made over the issue.
The petitioner pleaded to the court to stop the government authorities from taking any action against these companies till a law is made over the matter.
The high court ordered the government to avoid any action over the matter and summoned a reply from the provincial government and other parties in the case.
It should be noted that Punjab’s transport department had earlier declared Uber and Careem ride-hailing services as illegal through an official notification, seizing some of the companies’ vehicles and imposing a fine of Rs 2000 per vehicle.
The transport department was of the view that private vehicles should be registered as taxis first and their route permits should also be established.
Uber and Careem have been providing their services worldwide by offering pick and drop facilities at their doorsteps. Customers just have to download their applications in order to book their rides.
