Legislation is required to contain ‘bomb blast’ of overpopulation: CJP

ISLAMABAD: “An alarming rate of population overgrowth is basically a bomb blast. The resolution of the issue needs legislation,” the chief justice observed.

Distressed with the issue of overpopulation, chief justice Saqib Nisar made these remarks as the apex court resumed hearing a suo motu case related to population growth in the country.

The top judge expressed his concerns that resources and housing space are falling short in Pakistan owing to population bomb. The matter should be tackled by the help of effective policy-making from the federal government which must be followed on provincial level.

Attorney General (AG) told the court that following 18th Amendment, the provinces were given the authority to run the department of population control.

The issue of overpopulation and problems related to it should be taken into the council of common interest (CCI), the chief justice directed while stressing “if overpopulation and water crisis are not dealt with seriousness then circumstances may get very troublesome.”
