Lahore: DCO announces completion of rescue operation at factory collapse site

DCO Muhammad Usman talking to media here, said that 103 people were rescued alive and 45 dead bodies retrieved from the debris in what he called the biggest rescue operation of its kind ever undertaken in the country.

DCO Lahore said 17,500 matric tonnes of debris was removed from the site of the collapsed factory in the operation that was continued for 131 hours.

Replying a question, he said action will be taken against those responsible for the tragic incident.

Director General rescue operation, speaking on the occasion, said the focus of the effort was to pull out as many people alive as possible.

However, he said that now there were hardly any signs of anyone’s being still alive under the debris.

The four-storey polyester factory which manufactured polythene shopping bags came down suddenly six days ago killing dozens and trapping scores of others.

The officials said the samples of three unidentified dead bodies were sent to the Forensic Science Agency for DNA tests for their identification.

According to witnesses relatives of a number of labourers were still present at the site of the collapse, claiming their loved ones were under the debris.
