Karachi Water Crisis: Hubco proposes to install 300m gallon desalination plant

KARACHI: During a meeting of Sindh cabinet on Monday, Hub Power Company (Hubco) offered Sindh government to install a 300 million gallon desalination plant to help resolve Karachi’s water crisis.

According to authorities, the desalination plant will be installed near Hub.

The meeting chaired by Chief Minister of Sindh Murad Ali Shah chalked out a plan to install a desalination plant to sweeten the water of sea. A strategy of imposing ban on plastic bags also came under discussion.

The Sindh CM sought assistance from Hubco to generate electricity from the garbage of Karachi.

The provincial cabinet also gave approval for the appointment of Tariq Ahsan as President of Sindh Bank for a period of one year.

Asian Development Bank (ADB) led by its Director-General Central West Asian Department (CWRD) Mr. Werner Liepach. The other delegation members include Director Social Sector CWRD Ms. Rie Hiraoka, Country Director Pakistan Xiaohong Yang, Senior Project Officer Mian Shaukat Shafi, PRM Senior Programs Officer, Nasruminallah Mian and Project Director Ms. Sana Masood,

The chief minister told the delegation that Sindh government has planned to install desalination plant to provide drinking water to the people of Karachi. He said that similar water supply and drainage schemes are being planned for other districts of the province.

ADB DG assured CM Sindh of technical and financial support. It was agreed that the provincial government through Planning and Development Department would provide details of the proposed desalination plants, water and drainage schemes to the ADB.
