KARACHI: Sindh Food Authority (SFA) officials conducted a raid at two food factories in Surjani Town and sealed them for making unhygienic ketchup, mayonnaise and pickle, ARY News reported on Thursday.
The food watchdog officials found unhygienic substances being used in the food items made at these food factories. The workers at the factories were using chemicals, textile color and other hazardous substances in food items, officials said.
They were using flavors instead of tomatoes, while making tomato ketchup.
The production area was filled with flies, cockroaches and other insects, officials said.
The SFA officials confiscated 1800 liters of unhygienic ketchup, 1400 liters mayonnaise, 900 kilograms of pickle, 70 kilograms starch and five kilograms of textile color, and destroyed it.
The samples of ketchup and other food items were taken and sent to the testing laboratory for chemical analysis.
It is pertinent to mention here that the SFA, does not have its own laboratory. The provincial government has recently decided to prepare two mobile labs with modern facilities and technology to meet the immediate requirements.
A proposal to build a state-of-art laboratory has been in planning phase with the government.
The SFA was made functional in April this year but it has so far been working in Karachi alone with an aim to gradually expand its domain to other districts of the province.
