KARACHI: The driver of a public bus that rammed into a motorcycle, killing a minor girl and injuring a man, has been arrested, police officials said on Saturday.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for South Javed Akbar Riaz, the driver was arrested on late Friday night.
Muhammad Salim, the bus driver, confessed to ruthless driving that killed a minor school going girl and injured her father.
Soon after the accident, the driver fled from the site of incident. He says it was embarrassing; hence, he could not bear to stay after glancing at body of the minor girl who died on the spot.
“I will not run away now and accept whatever punishment would be given to me,” the driver said.
The bus owner, Muhammad Azam, has also been arrested, besides those who took the law into their hands and torched the buses, police informed media.
Heart-wrenching CCTV footage showed two buses were racing and travelling towards Numaish Chowrangi on MA Jinnah road when one of the buses crashed into the motorcycle near Radio Pakistan building.
As result of the incident, six-year-old Sakina died on the spot and her father sustained critical injuries. The incident infuriated the bystanders who later torched two buses in apparent reaction.
The bus drivers fled from the site of the incident to avoid an arrest. The enraged crowd put up resistance to firefighting operations after setting both buses ablaze.
The blaze was put out after police intervention. As many as 11 people were arrested for taking the law into hands and setting the buses on fire.
The body of the minor girl and injured father were shifted to a nearby hospital for medico-legal tests and treatments respectively.
