JI threatens to approach SC against overbilling by K-Electric

KARACHI: Extending its campaign against power load-shedding and over-billing in the city, Jamaat Islami (JI)’s sit-in outside the Governor House has entered into second day today (Sunday), ARY News reported.

Emir JI Siraj-ul-Haq is expected to address the sit-in today.

Holding placards in front of the governor house, hundreds of JI workers took to the street on Saturday to lodge a complaint against K-Electric by urging government to take stern action against the power utility.

JI’s Karachi emir Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman threatened the provincial government of backlash over police intervention during the protest, as what he called it a ‘peaceful sit-in’.

Addressing the sit-in, Rehman said yesterday that the power tariff should be decreased with immediate effect.

He warned

of approaching the Supreme Court if the issue was not addressed. “In the next phase we will approach the Supreme Court. We have already launched a million petition drive as part of our campaign against load-shedding and over-billing by the K-Electric,” he added.

Moreover, he appealed people of Karachi to come out and raise their voice against the mismanagement of the K-Electric.

The party decision of staging sit-in in the red zone of the city came after its two consecutive protests.

Last month, city administration imposed section 144 and barred JI workers from staging a sit-in on Sharah-e-Faisal and in its wake police detained JI leader Hafiz-ur-Rehman for violating section-144. He was released shortly after detention.
