IHC summons PEMRA chief on June 9

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad High Court (IHC) has summoned Acting Chairman of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) on June 9 over a plea of a private member of the authority, ARY News reported on Friday.

Mian Shams, a private member of the authority, had filed petition in the IHC calling a meeting violation of the court orders.

The court has summoned Acting Chairman of the electronic media regulatory authority Pervez Rathore for the hearing on June 09.

The authority in a meeting attended by only government members today suspended the license of Geo News for 15 days and imposed a fine of Rs. 10 million over a complaint of the Defence Ministry.

A member of PEMRA, Israr Abbasi, after announcement of the decision said that the government has interfered in the functioning of the authority. He said the PEMRA members were intimidated adding that the decision will be challenged in the court.

He called the PEMRA session held today as illegal.
