IHC seeks explanation on Senate chairman election

According to details, the IHC conducted hearing of a petition filed by PTI central information secretary, Dr Shireen Mazari, pertaining to the election of Senate chairman and deputy chairman.

During the hearing, Mazari’s attorney took the stance that the top Senate posts cannot be filled in as long as all the units of the Federation are not completed.

He said that at present there is no representation of Fata and the Federation in the upper house, and that the chairman and deputy chairman can only be elected after fulfilling the requirements of Article 59 and 60 of the Constitution of Pakistan.

While, IHC has also withheld the notification of the appointment of Raheela Magsi, he added.

At this, Justice Athar Minallah said that there are members in the Senate from Fata.

“If a senator dies or a few senators retire from various provinces, then neither the Senate proceedings can be halted, nor can it be regarded as illegal”, he remarked.

The court while seeking a written answer from the attorney general adjourned the hearing for a week.
