Karachi commissioner forms committee to probe lift collapse at under-construction building

KARACHI: Karachi Commissioner Iftikhar Shalwani on Monday constituted a committee to investigate the lift accident at an under-construction building in Karachi that claimed lives of at least five workers, ARY News reported.

The Karachi commissioner announced this during a meeting here at his office. Deputy Commissioner South Salahuddin Ahmed, the Sindh Building Control Authority director general, senior police officers, Assistant Commissioner Ejaz Rind and others were also present on this occasion.

The probe team headed by the deputy commissioner south will present its report in fortnight.

The meeting was briefed that a sub-contractor of the building was arrested while hunt for the key suspect was underway. The forum was told that a first information report had been lodged in the incident.

Owner of the building Muhammad Ameen, contractor Mosa Iqbal and Irfan-ur-Rehman have been named in the case lodged at the Boat Basin police station on complaint of Sub-Inspector (SI) Riaz.

Charges of murder and denial from giving medical aid have been included in the case.

On March 9, five labourers lost their lives when a construction lift being used by them collapsed at a building in Boat Basin area of the metropolis.

However, the reasons for the accident were not yet disclosed.

Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) South said that the incident caused due to lift collapse when labourers were busy in installing glasses on the under construction building.
