Head of JIT formed to probe rape, murder of Zainab changed

LAHORE: The head of the joint investigation team (JIT) constituted to carry out probe into the rape and murder of 7-year-old Zainab in Kasur, was changed on Friday at the request of the father of the victim.

Regional Police Officer (RPO) Multan Muhammad Idrees has been appointed as new head of the investigation team.

The heartbroken father of Zainab, Mohammad Ameen Ansari, had raised objection on the head of the JIT formed to probe the horrific incident that outraged the entire nation.

Addressing a press conference, Ameen had said that he didn’t have trust in the head of the investigation team and urged that he should be changed.

On Wednesday, protests erupted in Kasur after the minor, who was kidnapped, was found raped, dead and buried in a garbage dump.

The girl’s rape and murder sparked widespread outrage as the people from all social strata deplored the incident as horrific, demanding #JusticeForZainab.

Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, while chairing a meeting, announced a Rs 10 million reward for those who would help identify the killer of little Zainab.

The protests turned violent on Wednesday when the police personnel opened fire on hundreds of protesters, outside DC Office in Kasur, killing two people.
