Govt moves to convince disgruntled Senate Chairman Rabbani

ISLAMABAD: : Following the protest lodged by Chairman Senate Raza Rabbani over persistently incomplete quorum in the senate sessions, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday has stepped into the matter by appointing senior leader Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) Raja Zafar-ul-Haq to convince Rabbani, ARY News reported.

A delegation of government and opposition senators made efforts to convince the agitated senate chairman in a meeting yesterday. However, the meeting remained inconclusive.

Meanwhile, the chairman Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and the party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari have supported Rabbani’s unprecedented move by declaring his stance ‘justified’.

Former president Asif Ali Zardari has advised Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to personally talk to the disgruntled chairman of the upper house and address his reservations.

The government has reportedly constituted a committee headed by senior PML-N leader Raja Zafar-ul-Haq, also included Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, to talk with the chairman senate.

A delegation, in this regard, will again meet Raza Rabbani in a bid to convince him and bring him back to the Senate.

Yesterday Rabbani left his senate chairman’s seat and returned the government protocol by postponing all the proceedings of the house for an indefinite period in protest over constant absence of ministers in the house.

Many senators have supported the chairman’s stance and one of PML-N’s senators, Nisar Muhammad Khan, had presented his resignation to the chairman in support of his unprecedented move.
