KARACHI: Police on Tuesday managed to end an hours long hostage drama after successful negotiations with an armed intruder in a factory located in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Maymar area, ARY News reported.
According to details, an armed man entered a factory in Gulshan-e-Maymar Industrial area and took at least three staff members hostage demanding his “unpaid salary”.
The man named Saleem Shahzad was a former employee of the factory and claimed that he was unjustly fired from his job and was not even paid three months salary by factory owners.
“I will blow myself and my colleagues up if I don’t get paid,” Saleem Shahzad said in a video message recorded through one of the hostages.
He had a gun in his hand and claimed to have explosive material in his bag.
A police team led by SSP Malir cordoned off the factory and assured him that if he surrenders his demands will be fulfilled.
After at least eight hours of negotiation, the man surrendered himself before the police and was taken into custody. All three staff members were rescued.
SSP Malir Munir Shaikh told media that Shahzad was fired by the factory owners at least six months ago and was not paid his three months’ dues.
He added that the suspect handed over his gun while his bag didn’t have explosive material but just some used clothes.
