ISLAMABAD: The first phase of the sixth population census, which began on 15th of the last month, has been concluded in sixty-three districts across the country.
During the first phase, the census was conducted in sixteen districts of Punjab, eight of Sindh, fourteen of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, fifteen of Balochistan, five of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and five districts of Gilgit Baltistan.
The second phase of the census will commence on 25th of this month, and culminate on 25th of the next month.
As many as 84,000 enumerators are taking part in the exercise to collect data from 168,120 census blocks across the country.
The second phase of census will be conducted in the remaining divisions of the four provinces as well as Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas.
The first census in the country was conducted in 1951, followed by second in 1961, third in 1972, instead of 1971 due to political turmoil, and the fourth in 1981.
The fifth census, which was due in 1991, was held in March 1998. The army assisted the authorities in conducting the last census 19 years ago.
