FIA arrests ex-Pakistan Sports Board director general on corruption charge

GUJRANWALA: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Thursday arrested former Pakistan Sports Board Director General Akhtar Nawaz Ganjera over alleged involvement in corruption and misuse of his authorities.

The investigation agency sources said that Akhtar Ganjera was involved in financial misappropriation in Narowal Sports City and gave contracts on the basis of favoritism and used sub-standard material in construction of different projects.

FIA officials said that after the arrest, Ganjera was shifted to Gujranwala on a five-day remand.

They said that two more officers of the PSB, Ejaz Akbar and Izhar Ahmed, were also nominated in the same case.

The sources said Narowal Sports City was built for Rs3 billion and Ganjera was a self-appointed project director of its construction.

FIA Assistant Director Malik Nasir found financial embezzlement in a number of things bought for the complex and investigation revealed that the suspects showed fake receipts to the government authorities.

Sources said that the law enforcement authorities had decided to include Riaz Peerzada, Ahsan Iqbal and former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani.
