Extension in Rangers powers rests with Sindh Assembly, says Shah

Sindh Assembly will decide on additional powers to Rangers – CM Shah also confirmed earlier statement by a senior provincial minister today.

In his interaction with media, the chief minister termed it a ‘constitutional need’.

When asked, Shah laughed off a question pertaining to receiving funds from the federation.

On the other hand, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) submitted a resolution in the Sindh Assembly Secretariat demanding extension in Rangers powers.

Rangers in Sindh were earlier given additional powers to search out and conduct raids for the arrest of suspects.

The paramilitary force could also detain a suspect for as long as 90 days.

The Nine Zero raid on March 11 and Dr. Asim Hussain’s arrest followed by 90-day detention also came as a result of these special powers.

However, now the matter of extension in these powers has landed the Sindh government in a difficult situation.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan also clarified that if the provincial government does not extend Rangers powers then the federation will call back all paramilitary personnel, who have long been assisting maintenance of Sindh law and order.
