ECP submits reply in PHC over KP elections

PESHAWAR: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) submitted their response regarding Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) elections in Peshawar High Court, ARY News reported citing sources.

According to sources, the commission informed the court that they cannot give a date for elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as the governor KP has already announced October 8 for elections in the province.

The ECP issued a notification after the governor’s announcement because the ECP have no authority to announce the election date its only responsibility is holding elections.

Earlier, Peshawar High Court had sought a response from the ECP in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa election case.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had approached the Peshawar High Court (PHC) seeking polls within 90 days after the Supreme Court office returned the KP elections petition with objections.

The petition maintained that the KP governor violated the Constitution by ignoring and disobeying the Supreme Court’s clear instructions regarding the provincial elections schedule.

It is pertinent to mention here that the demand for the disbursement of Rs21 billion in additional funds for the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) elections was rejected by the federal government.
