ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday issued a notification to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lawmakers MNAs Maiza Hameed and Rukhsana Kokab for violating its code of conduct after campaigning for the ruling party’s candidate in upcoming NA-120 by-election.
“ECP has prohibited members of the national assembly from campaigning for the by-election,” the notification said.
The ruling party has been fielding former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s spouse Begum Kulsoom Nawaz in Lahore’s NA-120 constituency.
“Violating the code of conduct, you [Hameed and Kokab] have been campaigning for Kulsoom Nawaz,” the notification added.
According to the notification, the duo had been dispatched a similar notice on September 6 but they had failed to respond.
This time they have been summoned on September 20.
The ECP also summoned the Punjab chief secretary to turn up before it on September 20 for a hearing into the violation of the code of conduct.
Reminding the chief secretary of being subpoenaed earlier this month, the ECP’s notification stated that the political activities continued in the constituency despite its prohibition.
