ECP to install CCTV cameras at polling stations ahead of NA-120 by-election

ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is all set to install Close Circuit TV (CCTV) cameras ahead of NA-120 by-election in Lahore, scheduled on September 17.

Contingents of Pakistan Army will also be deployed during the by-election in the constituency to avoid any untoward incident.

Earlier, the ECP had made a request to the Defence Ministry for deployment of army personnel during the by-poll in NA-120.

Following the approval by the ministry, ECP called upon Punjab chief secretary to take necessary measures to install secret CCTV cameras at printing press and polling stations in writing on request of Pak Army.

Meantime, National Database

and Registration Authority (NADRA) responded to ECP’s letter, stating that as many as 27,000 voters in the constituency holding National Identity Cards (NICs) issued before 2005 while around 2,200 voters possessing Overseas Identity Cards (NICOP). However, it said that the biometric data of voters with more than 12-year-old NICs and NICOP are not available.

The NA-120 seat fell vacant after PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif stepped down as Prime Minister following historic Supreme Court verdict in Panama leaks case.

Ex-PM Nawaz Sharif’s daughter, Maryam Nawaz, is supervising the by-election campaign in absence of her mother Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.

On the flip side, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has pitched Dr. Yasmin Rashid, who was runner up in the constituency during 2013 general elections, to contest NA-120 by-election.
