Sharif’s disqualification: ECP expected to announce schedule for holding by-polls

LAHORE: After the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif from his Prime Minister post, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is expected to announce schedule for holding by-polls on NA-120 (Lahore) by next week, sources said.

The seat for National Assembly has been left vacant after the de-notification of Sharif.

The by-election is likely to be held in the second week of September as the ECP is enforced to hold by-election in a constituency within 60 days after any legislature seat left vacant, sources further said.

The commission has asked the provincial election commissioner to send names for appointment of officers including district returning officer, returning officer and assistant returning officers, sources revealed.

Moreover, the chief justice of high court has also been contacted to nominate two judges for the appellate authority.

It is to be mentioned here that Nawaz Sharif was disqualified on July 28 (Friday) from holding public office by the Supreme Court of Pakistan in a historic verdict in Panama Papers case.

Following the verdict, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) spokesperson announced Nawaz Sharif had stepped down as the prime minister by acceding to the court orders despite having reservations, leaving the National Assembly seat vacant.

In the General Elections 2013, Nawaz Sharif had secured 91,683 votes by winning the seat against 52,354 votes of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s candidate Yasmeen Rashid .
