Death of sanitary worker: Doctors’ arrest prompt boycott at hospitals

UMERKOT: Police have arrested  the Civil Hospital Umerkot’s medical superintendent booked along with two other doctors for refusing medical aid to four sanitary workers that resulted in the death of one of them, ARY News reported.

Police action prompted doctors to boycott the OPDs and even the emergency services at the hospital and other medical facilities in Kunri, Pithoro and Samaro, adding to the miseries of patients.

Protesting doctors demanded the release of the MS and withdrawal of the case against three doctors.

A day before, Irfan, 30, a sanitary worker, died when doctors at Civil Hospital Umerkot refused to treat him because of his unclean body. The victim along with three fellows had fallen unconscious while clearing a choked manhole.

When they were rushed to the hospital doctors persistently refused to touch their bodies because of the filth on them and asked their attendants to wash them before they would start treatment.

Irfan died while his body was being washed, said the victim’s brother, Pervaiz. Had the doctors treated him in timely manner, his life could have been saved, he regretted.

The infuriated members belonging to the Christian community of the district took the dead body to the press club and hold a protest demonstration against the attitude of the doctors.

When the matter was widely reported by media, the local police swung into action registering a criminal case against six persons, including three doctors, on the complaint of the victim’s brother.
