Court directs Altaf to submit apology over hate speech

A three-member bench headed by Justice Syed Mazhar Ali Akbar Naqvi hearing three petitions against Altaf Hussain.

The court had earlier passed an order on three identical petitions seeking a ban on media coverage of Altaf Hussain’s speeches in the wake of his statements against the state institutions.

They had also sought proceedings under Article 6 of the Constitution against the MQM chief and disqualification of his party’s parliamentarians.

Asima Jahangir, the counsel of Altaf Hussain in his arguments said that the ban on the MQM chief will be against the constitution.

The interior ministry in a report informed the court that the Pakistani passport of Altaf Hussain was expired in 1994 adding that now he has dual nationality.

The court declared the report incomplete and ordered the ministry to resubmit a report in the next hearing of the case.

The counsel of a petitioner argued before the court that the petition was non-maintainable as Altaf Hussain’s plea not signed by the applicant but his party’s leader Farooq Sattar.

The bench later adjourned the hearing till October 2nd.
