KARACHI: Sindh government has suspended cellular services in major cities including Karachi, Hyderabad, and Sukkur to ensure foolproof security on Eid Milad-un-Nabi (12 Rabiul Awwal) occasion.
The authorisation was given by the Interior Ministryon Friday, according to which the services would remain suspended from 8am to 8pm.
On Thursday, the provincial government approached the Sindh government to request the suspension of mobile services for the safety of general public.
According to the letter, Sindh government had requested a complete blockade of mobile phones and internet services for at least three cities i.e Karachi, Sukkur, and Hyderabad.
The letter was released after a clash reported in Khairpur city on Thursday, claiming four lives and injuring as many as 10 people during Eid Milad-un-Nabi procession preparations.
Three people sustained critical injuries in the firing incident. However, the reason behind feud and gun battle between two groups is yet to be ascertained. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital.
Eid Milad-un-Nabi, the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), is celebrated with religious fervour by Muslims all over the world.
As many as 23,000 police personnel have been deployed in Karachi, besides 5,000 policemen to perform security duties along the route of main procession in the city.
