Karachi: Bus driver who crushed young school girl arrested

KARACHI: Police on Friday evening claimed to have arrested the bus driver who had crushed a young school girl to death and injured her father on M.A. Jinnah Road, ARY News reported.

The bus driver Saleem had fled after the incident. SSP South Javed Akbar Riaz confirmed that arrest and said the bus owner Azam had also been taken into custody.

Both have been shifted to Preedy police station, while the search for another bus driver who was racing on the busy thoroughfare for a small bet is still underway.

A police vehicle seen passing by oblivious to the incident could not be ascertained. SP Saddar said they are working to identify which police station the vehicle belonged.

He said the police vehicle should have stopped after the accident which could have left to the prompt arrest of the driver. The thoroughfare is frequented by police vehicle heading to the court and other police stations.

On Friday morning, six-year-old schoolgirl was killed and father sustained critical injuries when an over speeding bus crashed into a motorcycle near Radio Pakistan building on M.A. Jinnah Road.

The minor girl identified as Sakina died on spot while her father sustained injuries.

The incident infuriated bystanders who later torched two buses. Eyewitnesses claimed the buses,were racing and travelling towards Numaish when one of the buses rammed into the motorcycle.

Soon after the incident, the bus drivers had fled from the site of incident to avoid arrest. The enraged crowd set both buses on fire and put up resistance to firefighting operation. The blaze was put out after police intervention. As many as 11 people were arrested for taking the law into hands and setting the buses on fire.

The body of minor girl and injured father were shifted to a nearby hospital for medico-legal tests and treatments respectively.
