People of Kashmir, not India to decide future: Sartaj Aziz

The was a direct rebuff to the Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj who remarked that the entire Jammu and Kashmir was a integral part of India and was not subject to negotiation with Pakistan. She said that the dream of the people of Pakistan to make Kashmir part of their country will never come true.

Pakistan has taken huge exception to the statement of Swaraj in a press conference where she directly addressed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and said that he must know that “Kashmir can never become a part of Pakistan”.

Nawaz Sharif has said we are waiting for the day when Kashmir becomes Pakistan. He was recently addressing a public gathering to celebrate the election victory in Azad Jammu and Kashmir where he raised slogans in favour of the separatist movement in Indian-Occupied Kashmir and said that it cannot be stopped and will be successful. Sharif had prayed for the people of Kashmir suffering from the brutality of Indian forces.

In reply, Sartaj Aziz said that the decision of the future of Kashmir will be taken by the people of the valley. He said that the right to self-determine was given by the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, and it was the moral responsibility of India to conduct the plebiscite for them to determine their own future.

Aziz also condemned the statement of Sushma who labeled Burhan Wani as a ‘terrorist’, and said that more than 200,000 people had attended his funeral despite the crackdowns and curfews.

He said that Pakistan will continue to provide moral, political and diplomatic support to the people of Kashmir. He appealed to the United Nations, and other international human rights organisations to take notice of the situation in the region.
