Former VC of Punjab University sent on 10-day physical remand

LAHORE: Dr. Mujahid Kamran, former vice chancellor (VC) Punjab University (PU), has been given into the physical remand for 10 days on the directions of an accountability court of Lahore on Friday.

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) produced Dr. Mujahid Kamran before the accountability court along with five other accused named Dr. Liaquat, Dr. Aurangzaib, Dr. Raas Masood, Dr. Kamran Zahid and Ameen Athar.

During the hearing, the former VC maintained that he served with sheer honesty throughout his tenure.

Regarding charges of illegal appointments, Dr. Mujahid said that all hirings approved by him were presented before the syndicate. He refused to admit that none of the employee, he appointed, was ghost or fake, the official record of all employees exists, Karman added.

The court later accorded the permission to NAB for a 10-day remand of the educationist.

A day earlier, the National Accountability Bureau arrested Dr. Mujahid Kamran on charges of irregularities during his tenure.

The anti-graft watchdog apprehended Kamran after he appeared before the Bureau Lahore office to record his statement.

The erstwhile PU VC is alleged for carrying out massive irregularities during his tenure at the varsity. Among number of improprieties, Kamran has charges of granting approval for several hirings across the university in violation of the laws, in addition to this, he is also accused of being involved for the unlawful appointment of his wife Shazia Qureshi as the principal of Punjab University Law College.

Awarding scholarships to students on the basis of nepotism, as well as giving contracts to his “preferred” contractors in violation of the laws are the other allegations against the educationist.
