Abdul Ghani Majeed is in custody of FIA, IHC told

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday conducted hearing into arrest of Abdul Ghani Majeed, son of Omni Group tycoon Anwar Majeed, by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), ARY News reported.

The investigation officer (IO) also turned up before the IHC bench.

The court asked the officer that how could the arrest orders were issued from Islamabad when the case was underway in Karachi.

The probe officer said NAB had its main office in Islamabad hence the orders were issued from the capital city. He told the court that Ghani Majeed was still in the custody of the Federal Investigation Agency.

Ghani’s lawyer said the arrest warrants issued for his client were illegal. He said the NAB overstepped its domain by issuing the arrest orders.

Justice Aamer Farooq asked the investigation officer whether he had interrogated Ghani. “He’s not in the NAB custody, hence I couldn’t interrogate him,” responded the lawyer.

The judge questioned: “You could have gone to jail for interrogating the suspect.”

The business tycoon’s lawyer asked where he should go, either Karachi or Islamabad, if he had to apply for a bail. The IO stated that a bail plea could be filed in any court.

Chairman National Accountability Bureau Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal on Feb 6 had issued arrest warrant for Abdul Ghani Majeed.

The NAB said that Abdul Ghani Majeed, had illegally bought a plot in Nehr Khyam area of Clifton, Karachi.
