“Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care”- World Environment Day today

The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is ,”Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care.”

The practical theme stated above clearly outlines the fact that seven billion people spread across the world should do more to ensure a healthier environment and do their best to cut environmental hazards such as pollution and wastage of natural resources, etc. For instance, pollution is contributing towards a thinning ozone layer and giving rise to numerous health issues. In their bid to advance and outmatch each other in industrial production and economic output, countries across the world are causing uncontrollable pollution.

This pollution in kind is contributing to menaces such as global warming and frequent climatic changes. Also, due to industrial production, the world is becoming less greener, more arid and becoming devoid of vegetation. The rising population will demand more food in the coming future and for that, we need to ensure that agricultural activities do not become victim to advancement and urbanization.

 

Also, the rising temperature on account of climatic changes, is resulting in the melting of glaciers. The availability of fresh water is also declining and it is estimated according to a report by United Nations World Water Assessment Program that at current usage rates, the world will have 40% less fresh water than it needs in 15 years.

The Kyoto Protocol is an international treaty, which extends the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that commits State Parties to reduce greenhouse gases emissions, based on the premise that (a) global warming exists and (b) man-made CO₂ emissions have caused it.

Care must be taken to ensure that we must preserve our environment and natural habitats, so that God forbid, they may not face extinction some day. Pollution, especially air pollution, should not be taken lightly. Outdoor air pollution was estimated to cause 3.7 million premature deaths worldwide in 2012. Let’s pledge from this day that we would pressurize our governments and society to contribute for healthier environment not only for ourselves, but for the generation to come.

In Pakistan, the hashtag #CokeTripToNathiaGali was trending in Pakistan. The annual trip, organized in partnership with World Wide Fund (WWF) is used to highlight Pakistan’s environment and how more can be done to preserve it.
