ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday reserved its verdict on petitions seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif for railing against the judiciary.
A single bench of the court, comprising Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, reserved the verdict after hearing arguments of the counsels of petitioners.
Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) and others had approached the high court pleading to initiate a contempt of court case against Sharif for criticizing the Supreme Court judges in the wake of his disqualification in the Panama Papers case.
The petitioners submitted that the former prime minister had constantly been criticizing the Supreme Court judges, which not only constituted contempt of the court but was also in contrast with the constitutional provisions.
Sharif was bent on endangering the democratic system, they argued while pleading the court to restrain him from criticizing the judiciary and PEMRA from airing his contemptuous speeches. The petitioner pleaded to the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the former prime minister for his anti-judiciary rhetoric.
Nawaz Sharif, who was disqualified by the Supreme Court on July 28, has been quite vocal against the court and judges in his speeches in public gatherings and interaction with media.
