WASHINGTON: A committee of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has unanimously adopted a Pakistan-sponsored resolution, reaffirming the universal realization of the right of people to self-determination.
The resolution, co-sponsored by seventy-five countries, was adopted in the Third Committee session, which says the right of self- determination is a fundamental condition to guarantee the human rights.
Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UN, Maleeha Lodhi said the adoption of the resolution reaffirms the inviolability of the right to self-determination for all people without any exception, including the Jammu and Kashmir region.
She said the passage of this resolution with consensus means the international community rejects continued illegal occupation of territories by foreign forces from Palestine to Jammu and Kashmir.
The resolution is expected to come up for General Assembly’s endorsement next month.
Even after several decades, Kashmiris are fighting for their right to self -determination and freedom from Indian oppression as the United Nations is yet to ensure implementation of its resolution calling for free and independent plebiscite to determine their fate.
On Oct 27, Kashmiris observed black day on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) dividing the Himalayan region of Kashmir to mark 70 years of its illegal occupation by the Indian forces.
