State Department Deputy Spokesman Mark Toner, in his daily news briefing, told reporters that India is eligible to be the part of Nuclear Suppliers Group according to the United States President Barack Obama
He said that making India a member of the body will prevent an arms race in the region. “This is not about an arms race and it’s not about nuclear weapons. This is about the peaceful civil use of nuclear energy, and so we would certainly hope that Pakistan understands that,” Toner said.
He added that any country can apply for NSG membership including Pakistan.
The state department spokesman said, “They (Pakistan) have made public their interest, and certainly any country can submit its application for membership. We will consider based on a consensus decision.”
