Twitter back after worldwide breakdown lasting over an hour

However, a large number of users reported they were encountering some glitches including errors in pictures and problems in the search bar.

Earlier, the popular microblogging site Twitter — which has around 2-3 million users from Pakistan alone — was unavailable worldwide on both web and mobile platforms. Users were unable to post tweets on it or to access their timelines.

The error message that users were getting had not given any specific timeframe for when the site would be back but users in Pakistan were able to access it at around 3.10 pm local times.

The error message screen had the following notice for users: “Something is technically wrong. Thanks for noticing — we’re going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon.”

Twitter had issued a status update on its Tumblr account which was updated at approximately 1420 Pakistan Standard Time to say: “Some users are currently experiencing problems accessing Twitter. We are aware of the issue and are working towards a resolution.”

Twitter, which has over 300 million active users, and over 3,900 employees, is ranked at Number 10 in the world and Number 10 in Pakistan according to Alexa which ranks websites worldwide based on commercial traffic.

In recent weeks, Twitter has faced criticism in the media for being reportedly unable to expand its user base. These reports have compared it unfavourably to Facebook, which now has 1.44 billion active users, almost five times that of Twitter.

The microblogging site has also been criticised of late for being unable to take action against Internet trolls with several high-profile cases where trolls on Twitter have harassed well-known figures and celebrities.
