Sadiq Khan

Sadiq Aman Khan is a British solicitor and politician who is serving as the current Mayor of London, in office since 2016.

He previously served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tooting from 2005 to 2016. Born and raised in a British Pakistani family, Khan received his law degree from the University of North London. He was always inclined towards progressive politics and after finishing his education, became more invested in left-wing activism.

He was a solicitor for a considerable period, working on cases that involved human rights, and for three years, he served as the chairperson of Liberty. He joined politics sometime in the early 1990s and from 1994 to 2006, served as a Councillor for the London Borough of Wandsworth. In 2004, he quit his job as a solicitor at Christian Khan firm to run for the Tooting parliamentary constituency. In 2008, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown made him the Minister of State for Communities in his Labour government. Khan was later appointed as the Minister of State for Transport.

Khan’s political views and résumé had already made him a popular figure in British politics when he decided to contest in the 2016 London mayoral election. Khan was eventually elected to the mayoral office with 56.8% of the vote, becoming London’s first ethnic minority mayor. In 2016, Khan actively supported the failed Britain Stronger in Europe campaign.
