LAHORE: The caretaker Punjab government on Friday moved a summary to convene the inaugural session of the newly elected Punjab Assembly, ARY News reported.

Sources said the law department has sent the summary to the Governor of Punjab to summon the assembly session. According to the summary, newly elected members of the legislature will take oath on Aug 13.

After the oath-taking of MPAs-elect, the election of speaker and deputy speaker of the assembly will take place.

Afterwards, the leader of the house, who automatically becomes the chief executive of the province, will be elected.

The Punjab governor is expected to issue a notification in this regard this evening.

The PTI, which won the 2018 general elections, is set to form the government at the Centre, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with the help of independent members and coalition partners, including Pakistan Muslim League Quaid-e-Azam (PML-Q).

The PTI claims to have reached the magical number of over 180 MPAs in the 371-house with the support of its allies and 25 independent members out of the total of 29.

The formerly governing PML-N, which emerged as the largest party in Punjab, couldn’t get the support of required number of members to form government in the country’s largest and politically most important province as it could win over a single independent.
