Sonakshi Sinha has criticized Deepika’s version of female empowerment and didn’t shy away from offering her opinions on the subject matter.
At a car launch event in Mumbai, the Action Jackson actress stated that she thinks female empowerment is not only restricted to sexual choices and exploitation. She however, did state that she had not seen the video but guessed the message it contained. Sonakshi was more of the view that female empowerment was more suited for those women who were not given due rights as far as employment or education were concerned. Simply dressing the way you want to dress and spending quality time with the man of your choice was not the only way to define female empowerment. Here’s what she said on the matter:-
“I have not seen the video but I know the thought behind it which is women empowerment. It’s a good initiative and I believe it is coming from a good space. But honestly, I believe empowerment should be given to women who need it and who are far away from where
we are right now. We have been bred and brought up in luxury. Empowerment is not just always about the kind of clothes you wear or who you want to have sex with or stuff like that. It’s about employment and about strength. It’s a good initiative but it should reach out to people who actually need it in the deep ends of our country.”Deepika’s short movie featured 99 women, each displaying actions that equated with more female independence and freedom of action. Deepika’s narration mainly focused on discrimination women have to face when they resort to exploring options on their own such as what to wear or with whom to have sex with. Whereas movie stars such as Arjun Rampal, Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt and Karan Johar hailed the video as a thought provoking clip, Twitter users did not greet the video with open arms.
It seems Sonakshi does not see eye to eye with Padukone. We’ll have to wait and see if Deepika comes up with a befitting reply or not in the coming days!
